The Apostles Jason and Sosipatres disciples of the Apostle Paul visited Corfu in 48 AD and taught Christianity to the inhabitants of the island .
The Church of Saints Jason and Sosipatros is one of the most important churches of the Byzantine period , belonging to the ecclesiastical architectural type of two-columned ( distyle ) cruciform with a dome , and the dome is supported on walls and west in two columns . It is one of the oldest and best-preserved examples of this type. It was built on the ruins of an ancient temple , probably in the 11th century , using construction materials from damaged buildings Palaiopolis .
Inside the church hosted important icons of Emmanuel Bouniali Tzanne and Michael Damascus . Particularly impressive is the marble temple in baroque style of the 18th century.
