The Peristyle Maitland is located in Upper Square and is known as " Sterna ". Constructed in 1816 in the Ionic order , with plans of the British Engineer Colonel George Whitmore. It was dedicated to the English commissioner of the Ionian Islands Thomas Maitland and exude the general climate of classicism that prevailed at the time.
At the top of the peristyle there is a circular inscription :
' S DAY RETURN reference opti EC GREAT BRITAIN AS THOMAS MAITLANDOU EFTHYNTIROS POLITICAL STORE ISLES ionic POLITAI KERKYRAION resurrected YEAR SOT aoist . "
Maitland monument , built over old Venetian large capacity water tank from where it got its name " Sterna ". The two inputs serve the citizens of Corfu continued to use the well and after the construction of the monument . The colonnade consists of 20 columns and the same number Ionic capitals .
