  • According to tradition , the period of the decline of Byzantium , Westerners tend to take the relics of saints and take them to their places , either to preserve or to the ownership . In the same way some sailors removed the relics of St. Nicholas in 1087 from Lycia ( where he was born and died as Archbishop of St. Nicholas ) to carry it in Italy in Bari . On their trip to Italy is said to have made a stop in the town of Corfu , where the inhabitants begged them to put the relic for veneration . They agreed and created a marble slab where they put the saint's relics to worship Christians Corfu. Much later built the namesake church in this place in honor of this event . The marble slab was placed where the relics of the saint because the second name of this church (Agios Nikolaos Plaka ) , although more is known by the name of Agios Nikolaos Baths, due to its location. The church of Saint Nicholas of the Baths built in the 17th century over an earlier church that was built in 1414 . The oldest church was destroyed in 1537 by the Turks. The existence of the present church of St. Nicholas Baths essentially due to the Cretan origin family Pashto , given the costs of its construction . In the early 20th century , the property of the church became public and was sold to create the Municipal Theatre of Corfu town.

    From here starts the Epitaph of Church of St. Nicholas of Baths (St. Nicholas Gate) (New Fortress) and M. Friday at 15:00 noon.
